Furniture making is a challenging nexus of art, craft, utility, and design. For me,
a successful piece of furniture must excel in each of these areas. I rely on my
craftsmanship to be the bedrock of my work. I use it to realize the functionality and
design of each piece I make. And I always strive to integrate my artistic goals into the
design to unify and strengthen the concept behind a piece of furniture.
The primary techniques I use to express ideas and sensibilities in furniture involve
texture, pattern and color. I use them to invite the emotional involvement of the viewer
(beyond the physical involvement that functionality incites) because I believe in the power
of the nuances of detail to convey large and complex thoughts and emotions.
